3 Months of Fatherhood
So you remember when I was worried that this blog would turn into just a series of parenting updates? Well I haven't even mentioned that kid of mine in the last 6 posts! Hooray for me. And for you. But since yesterday was a milestone of sorts, here's a brief update.
First, his name. Eatsleepcry really is outdated at this point. So his new name, until further notice, is Eatsleepsmilepee. Has a nice ring to it, don't ya think? He still loves to eat and sleep - that hasn't changed. Although now he does most of his sleeping at night, which is a nice change. In fact, he will usually now go 6 or 7 hours straight. But since he falls asleep at 9 or 10, that means we still have to get up at 3 or 4 in the morning. But he goes back down for a couple hours after that, so it's really not bad at all.
I've added the "smile" to his name because he does that quite often. And I know you might not believe me, but one of things he smiles at most is The Simpsons. Not when they're on the TV - I have a poster with about 20 or 30 characters on it, and anytime his eye catches it, he grins like a goofball and even giggles a little. That's my boy! He also loves to stare at the life-size cardboard cutouts of Homer and Bart that I have.
There is another time that he smiles a lot...and it's a little worrisome. He looks very happy when he's naked. Every time we change his diaper or his clothes, he gets a little too excited and joyful. I think he looks forward to bath time almost as much as dinner time. I fear he may become an exhibitionist. Or a nude art model.
As for the "pee," well, I hope you can figure that one out.
He is constantly becoming more aware of his surroundings. He reacts to visual and tactile stimulation so much more than he did even just a few weeks ago. He is learning to use his hands to hold on to things. One of the best things he's learned to do is poop before daddy gets home - much to mommy's frustration. What a good boy! He is starting to want to sleep on his side a lot. He twists and turns, trying to get his body to flip over, but he can't quite do it yet.
So here at the 3-month mark, I have to say we feel really lucky. He is mostly happy, rarely crying for no reason, and sleeping very well. I don't know if we're doing something right, or just not doing something wrong, but whatever it is, it's working (knock on wood 1000 times.)
*CORNY/SAPPY/CHICK-FLICK STUFF ALERT*
The other day I was holding him on my lap, helping him stand up on my legs (one of his favorite smile/laugh-inducing activities), and as he was giggling, looking right at me as I laughed back at him, I remarked to his mom that if anyone had told me that a baby could make me that happy at any given time, I wouldn't have had any anxiety or concerns about being a parent.
We went out to lunch and he wore this shirt:
...and the host at the restaurant told me how cool it was. Hey, he's my kid - you bet your ass he's cool. But not cold, mom...don't worry.
